Have you ever asked yourself why you do the things you do?
- Why do I buy a cheeseburger from McDonald’s when with the same money I could buy a decent sized steak?
- Why do I consider binge watching hours of a television show to be the epitome of relaxation?
- Why do I check my phone immediately when I wake up?
If you’re anything like me, you hate the idea of acting exactly like other people just for the sake of being normal. The problem though is that our lives have turned into a sequence of compulsory actions that we continue to participate in because they are considered to be “normal.”
I would argue that somewhere around 90% of the things that we do on a daily basis aren’t normal at all however. After all, in what world is it normal to choose a glowing screen, or printed pieces of green paper, over genuine relationships with our friends and family members who love us?
When we put it that way, most of would agree that our normal isn’t truly what is intended for our lives.
So, who is stopping you from creating a new normal? Who is stopping you from disposing of the things in life that aren’t bringing you to the “life to the full” that Jesus promised we would find in Him?
I think it would be wise for us to take seriously the words of Paul who wrote to the Romans and said “Do not be conformed to this (normal of this) age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
The average American spends around 5 hours staring at their cell phone on a daily basis. Do we really believe that this is what God had intended for our lives when he placed us in the Garden of Eden at the beginning of time?
I don’t anymore.
